Three Eagles

My portraits of American 'Indians' are for me like icons, or place holders if you will. I feel it is relevant for me to draw (re-document) them, because of the perilous existence of many indigenous peoples in present time. Other ways of living and experiencing the world, languages and customs and traditional knowledge are under siege by encroaching alien mindsets and business interests. The big boot of 'civilisation' comes to either poison their environment with oil spills and leaked chemicals, stamp them out of existence altogether, assimilate them by erasing their culture and killing their shared core identity, or else forcefully relocate them in order to protect an endangered animal they have coexisted with for thousands of years.

Jimi Playing
Charcoal on paper
cast in epoxy on panel
35.5 x 43 cm (14"x 17") paper size
40 x 50 cm (16"x 20") panel size
(Available)
Portrait of Jimi Hendrix on stage.
This is my attempt to draw him as fearlessly as he used to play.
The drawing has been cast in epoxy onto a panel
in a carefree, happy-go-lucky kind of way.
The glossy, crystal clear epoxy surface is quite reflective (as shown in the extra photographs, which makes the bold strokes of the drawing compete with bright patches and reflected glimmers and shadows. Only in some lighting circumstances or under certain angles the drawing is completely visible.
The piece is ready to hang, with a fixture on the back, or it can be leaned against a wall.
